GALLERY NEWS

We are currently showing a display of pastel works by three talented Western Australian artists - Julie Silvester, Linda O'Brien and Chris Martin.  These artists specialise in land and seascapes.  Scenes are taken from our local beaches, Rottnest, the north of our state, and Fiji.  This exhibition will continue until the end of May.

Linda's clever use of colour and tone portray the Pink Lakes of Rottnest as the light begins to die at the end of the day.  She is also capable of taking an ordinary roadside scene and transforming it into a work of art.

Julie's happy nature shines through in her stunning pastels of the local beaches.  The waves seem to dance a welcome and footsteps leading to the beach entice the viewer into the painting.

Chris's long views of the beach and the Swan River lead us along the shallows to the wooded headlands.  We are invited to look into the water and feel it on our feet as he draws us into his paintings.

These three artists capture the local landscape in very different ways, but their works remain quintessentially Australian.

As Autumn beckons us into Winter, come and view these works of art to remind you of Summer.

Chris Martin will be holding two pastel workshops in the gallery during the year.  The first one will take place on 1st and 2nd June from 10am - 4.30pm.  The second time-slot is November 2nd and 3rd.  Cost is $165 per person for the two days and includes a light lunch and tea and coffee.  Places are limited, so please call the gallery to register for these classes.  Chris is a master-pastel artist, who has been awarded numerous prizes for his work. He specialises in seascapes and Western Australian out-back scenes.

We hope to see you soon.

Janie Benzie & Jenny Laurie

Janie is a traditionalist and prefers to paint realistically using the age-old techniques of the masters. Whilst her main genre is still life she is now moving more and more into drawing the human body. Her ink sketches of these subjects are reminiscent of Norman Lindsay of whom she is a great fan.

Jenny's  main area of work is the practice of icon writing with egg tempera on wood panels, including water-gilding, which she has been studying with a master iconographer. Apart from learning these very particular artistics skills, she is fascinated with the rich historical traditions and sacred symbolism behind the resultant glowing images of saints - and sinners!
